Commercial Contracts Manager / In-House Counsel (Flexible Hours, Remote Working)

Our client is an independent utilities provider based in Surrey. They have a great opportunity for a qualified legal professional to join their team as the sole legal counsel. The role can be remote working but would need to have the ability to attend onsite meetings on an ad hoc basis in Leatherhead. It would also suit someone who is open to working on a flexible basis either three full time days a week or limited hours over 5 days.

The role will offer the autonomy to establish a robust legal function that will support:

  • Effective procurement
  • Efficient contract management
  • Management of dispute resolution
  • Effective risk assessment
  • Some experience establishing an effective contract management function ideally with knowledge of contract management platforms.
  • Strong communication and inter-personal skills with the ability to work effectively and collaboratively with colleagues and external parties.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Analytical with good problem-solving skills.
  • A good organiser with a natural ability to plan and organise to meet objectives and targets.

Job Responsibilities

  • Develop and operate the contract management framework, including effective administration of contracts, management of change and the provision of contractual templates and tool kits.
  • Manage the disputes process. Implement and operate a robust process for handling contractual and legal disputes with external parties.
  • Legal and contractual risk management. Identify, control and report on all material legal and commercial risks.
  • Manage external legal partners. Manage the interface with external legal partners, including the drafting and/or supporting the drafting of legal briefs.
  • Manage regulation. Working with the Regulation Team, support the development of regulatory change at an industry level, where legal expertise is required
  • Advice and support. Provide advice and support to colleagues relating to commercial and legal matters, as required.
  • Drafting review. Review of legal and contractual drafting as required.
  • Project work. Lead and support both internal and industry projects, providing legal guidance, supporting the achievement of each project’s objectives.
  • Policies and guidance materials. Produce and maintain policies, procedures, guidance documents and training materials relating to legal affairs.

Experience and Skills

  • Would suit an experienced contract manager or qualified solicitor who can demonstrate good commercial contract review and drafting.
